Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa received Egyptian businessman Naguib Sawiris on Wednesday at the People’s Palace in Damascus, according to Syrian state television.
The Syrian television al-Ikhbareya station did not disclose details of the meeting, only broadcasting a photograph of the Syrian president alongside the Egyptian businessman.
Sawiris previously said that he had outstanding financial obligations in Syria and that he had invested in the Syrian telecommunications sector.
He explained that he was forced to partner with Rami Makhlouf, Bashar al-Assad’s cousin, if he wanted to obtain a license.
Sawiris said, “This decision was wrong, but I had no other option if I wanted to invest in that country.”
