Mohamed Salah named Man of the Match as EFA hails Egypt’s “true captain”

National team superstar Mohamed Salah was officially named Man of the Match after guiding the Pharaohs to a historic qualification for the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Following his stellar performance against Australia, the Egyptian Football Association’s (EFA) official Facebook page celebrated the talisman by posting a photo of him, captioned: “A true captain steps up when you need him most.”

Egypt secured its first-ever spot in the tournament’s knockout stage after defeating Australia 4-2 in a dramatic penalty shootout at Dallas Stadium in Texas.

Regulation and extra time had concluded in a 1-1 deadlock. Egypt initially took the lead in the 13th minute through a precise header from Emam Ashour, before Australia equalized via an unlucky own goal by Mohamed Hany, who inadvertently deflected a cross into his own net.

The national team’s historic advancement follows a strong group-stage performance, where they finished second in Group G with 5 points, courtesy of a 3-1 victory over New Zealand and two 1-1 draws against Belgium and Iran.

Meanwhile, Australia had reached the Round of 32 by finishing second in Group D with 4 points, following a 2-0 win over Turkey, a goalless draw with Paraguay, and a 2-0 defeat against the United States.

With the victory secured, Salah and the Pharaohs now await the winner of the high-stakes clash between Argentina and Cape Verde to find out their upcoming Round of 16 opponent.
