Egypt welcomed on Sunday Ireland’s passage of a law prohibiting the import of goods from Israeli settlements and the completion of the necessary constitutional and legislative procedures for its enactment.
An Egyptian Foreign Ministry statement explained that this important stance reflects a commitment to the provisions of international law and resolutions of international legitimacy.
It also affirms an utter rejection of illegal Israeli settlement activities that violate the rights of the Palestinian people and undermine chances of achieving a just and lasting peace.
Egypt reiterated its call to the European Union and the international community to take similar legal and practical measures to ensure that they do not contribute, directly or indirectly, to supporting or perpetuating illegal settlements.
Egypt also reaffirmed its unwavering support for the legitimate and inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, stressing that achieving security and stability in the Middle East requires ending the Israeli occupation and establishing an independent Palestinian state within the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
