The African Union Commission expressed deep concern regarding the escalating tensions among Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Egypt, emphasizing that it is closely monitoring developments among the three nations.
In an official statement, the AU Commission called on the three member states to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from any actions or statements that could further escalate tensions and undermine peace and stability in the region.
The Commission stressed the paramount importance of dialogue, peaceful negotiations, and diplomatic channels to resolve all outstanding issues, affirming its readiness to support efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions and fostering peaceful resolution among the involved parties.
Emphasis on dialogue and diplomatic channels
The African Union statement underscored that constructive engagement and adherence to regional stability are essential for safeguarding security in the Horn of Africa and the wider continent.
This first official comment from the African Union comes following the mutual expulsion of diplomats between Cairo and Addis Ababa under a 48-hour deadline, alongside Ethiopia’s decision to close its embassy in Asmara, expel Eritrean diplomats, and Eritrea’s subsequent severance of diplomatic ties with Addis Ababa.
