Activists launch campaign against enslavement of women in Iraq

Activists from Hamalat al-Tamadon (Campaigns for Modernization) launched a campaign on Monday, denouncing the situation of women in Iraq under the slogan "Stop the Enslavement of Women in Iraq."

According to the campaign's webpage, the social and political circumstances in Iraq have caused a state of "barbarism and disregard for all human values," and the situation of women is particularly dire, as tribal customs related to slavery and human trafficking are revived.

"The events that took place in Basra a few days ago reflect the state of recklessness and brutality that prevail due to the influence of tribal laws, as 50 women, some of them underage, were presented as a kind of "compensation" after an armed dispute between two clans," the page read.

According to the activists, these degrading practices are no different from the brutality of ISIS, which treats women as commodities.

The campaign calls for the abolition of all tribal norms and laws degrading women in Iraq.
