Angered public hits streets over price hikes, water cuts

Various Egyptian cities witnessed demonstrations and vigils on Sunday in protest agaist runaway inflation and inadquate public services.

In Port Said, local residents rendered homeless by a recent fire staged a vigil to demand that the government provide them with alternative housing.

In Ismailia, members of various political parties and civil society organizations staged demonstrations to protest rising food prices. Demonstrators raised empty dishes to symbolize the looming threat of hunger.

Also in Ismailia, state-employed doctors from a local hospital threatened to go on strike if they were not paid their bonuses, which, they say, are three months overdue.

In Giza, meanwhile, dozens of people staged protests to register their discontent over frequent water shortages.
