Arab League blames Syria’s Assad for chemical attack

The Arab League said on Tuesday that it holds Syrian President Bashar al-Assad responsible for a chemical attack near Damascus, as speculation mounted over US preparations for a military strike.

Diplomatic sources said the statement, issued after a meeting of Arab League delegates in Cairo, was pushed through with strong backing from Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

On Monday, the United Nations said its experts would investigate the Assad regime's alleged use of chemical weapons in Damascus against two-year long protests demanding his ouster. Earlier news reports said inspection delegations were targeted by fire, which the state TV blamed on terrorists. The opposition, however, pointed fingers at regime forces.
