Archeologists join labor protests

Employees of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) staged protests before the parliament building in downtown Cairo to demand improved financial and working conditions, along with permanent employment contracts. Protesters say they are still considered temporary staff even though they have worked for the council for more than 15 years in some cases. The council is run by Zahi Hawas, a prominent archeologist who is no stranger to international media.

Nearby, workers for the Nobariya Company for Agricultural Mechanization also blamed the government for ignoring their longstanding demands. Frustrated workers say they have not received salaries in more than two years.

Workers for state-run land improvement centers, meanwhile, who have also been staging demonstrations outside parliament, filed a complaint on Monday with the Attorney General against the agriculture minister, who, they claim, has continued to turn a blind eye to their grievances.

People with special needs likewise maintained their weeks-long protest outside of parliament. They threatened to halt their respective medical treatments until their demands–which include more jobs and housing units in public housing projects–were met.
