Brotherhood leader asks media to support democracy

Muslim Brotherhood’s Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie called on media channels to support democracy and acceptance of the other.

The group’s political arm, the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), faced negative coverage due to statements by party representatives about various issues including politics, drinking and publicity during parliamentary elections.

In his weekly message, a statement published by the group every Thursday, Badie said that the media has great impact on the public and that the people cannot do without it. He called on media outlets to be ethical and evenhanded.

The FJP won 46 percent of seats in the People's Assembly and this week nominated its secretary general, Saad al-Katatny, as speaker of parliament.

“Media is essential to creating the atmosphere required for a complete societal renaissance,” Badie said.

Badie also called on the media to be unbiased and objective in covering events and reviewing facts.

"If the media can abide by these standards, it will add to the betterment of society, politically, socially and economically," he added.

Katatny said earlier that the party supports freedom of the press.
