Cairo struck by 2.1-magnitude earthquake on Friday

A minor earthquake struck Cairo on Friday evening, which local residents felt.

The National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) suggested that non-natural factors may have caused the tremor.

In an official statement, the President of the NRIAG, Taha Rabeh, announced that the stations of the National Seismic Network recorded a 2.1-magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale east of Cairo on Friday, RT Arabic reported.

Rabeh explained that the tremor “may have resulted from construction or industrial activities,” noting that it occurred precisely at 5:32 pm local time.

He further confirmed that the institute received no reports of casualties or property damage.

Typically, earthquakes felt by Cairo residents originate in the Mediterranean Sea to the north, with their tremors echoing through the northern governorates down to the capital, but this time the tremor’s epicenter was located directly within Cairo.
