Chief justice returns to Cairo from Istanbul due to protests

Councilor Farouk Soltan, chief justice of the Supreme Constitutional Court (SCC), returned from Istanbul on Tuesday, Mena said.

The state-run news agency related his return to the events in Tahrir Square, Essam Sharaf’s resignation to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), and to his role in following the developments in the next few hours.

The return comes amid unconfirmed reports that SCAF may hand over power to a judicial authority like the SCC or the Higher Judicial Council, Councilor Hossam al-Gheriany.

Councilor Ahmed Mekki, deputy head of the Court of Appeal, said Councilor Gheriany has denied knowing anything about the matter except what he has read in the media.
