Court overturns bail for influencer Shaker, orders 45-day detention pending trial

A specialized court has overturned the recent decision to release prominent social media influencer “Shaker,” who had been granted bail set at LE500,000.

The court instead ordered his remand in custody for an additional 45 days.

Defense attorney Mahmoud al-Shishtawy confirmed to the press that the prosecution had filed an official appeal against the release order, which the court upheld, resulting in Shaker’s return to detention.

Shaker, a popular figure across TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram, faces a litany of charges under the Information Technology Crimes Law.

Key allegations include disseminating indecent content via his official accounts and violating family values through content deemed by investigators to be “contrary to public morals” and “offensive to Egyptian society.”

The case previously went viral on social media following the announcement of the substantial bail amount, sparking widespread debate.

The release was short-lived as the Public Prosecution moved swiftly to appeal the decision.

Based on the findings of the preliminary investigation, Shaker has been referred to criminal trial. He stands accused of misusing social media platforms, including charges of defamation, public indecency, and the publication of immoral content.

The court is expected to try the case under the strict provisions of Articles 25 and 26 of Cybercrime Law #175 of 2018, which carries penalties of imprisonment and fines reaching LE 300,000.
