Disgruntled workers and grieving family members take to Cairo’s streets in protest

Families of the Egyptian sailors kidnapped by Somali pirates in August staged a demonstration before the Interior Ministry in Cairo recently over the government's failure to extricate their relatives.

“My father told me the government is not negotiating with the pirates,” said Osama al-Wakil, son of a kidnapped sailor. The Somalis have permitted the hostages scant communication with their families.

Meanwhile, 150 workers of the Nasr Automotive Company protested before the Egyptian Trade Unions Federation, complaining they have been forced into early retirement.

And in yet another manifestation of social discontent, 300 teachers staged protests before the education ministry for the tenth time in two months. The educators demand contract adjustments from temporary to permanent status.

Police dispersed the teachers and banned media coverage.
