Egyptian man shot in back from helicopter in Ukraine conflict: Official

The Assistant Foreign Minister for Consular Affairs and Egyptians Abroad Salah Eddin al-Sadek revealed the latest developments in the condition of an Egyptian man injured in Ukraine during the current war between Moscow and Kiev.

During a Sunday phone interview with Ahmed Moussa on Moussa’s TV program “Ala Massoulity” (By My Responsibility) on Sada El Balad Channel, Sadek said that the injured Egyptian man is called Mohamed Saad Ragab Mohamed Zayed and hails from al-Beheira governorate.

Zayed was visiting Ukraine to be with his wife before she gave birth. As the conflict broke out he had to leave the safe areas and was spotted by a helicopter and hit by two bullets in the back.

His condition remains stable.

Sadek added that he contacted his family through the embassy to reassure them about his health.

Sadek said that Ragab’s wife safely gave birth to his daughter. Ragab had arrived in Ukraine 20 days ago, before the conflict started.

Regarding the situation on the ground in Ukraine, Sadek assured that the Egyptian embassy is playing a great role in keeping the Egyptians there safe.

He stressed that the most crucial advice for Egyptians in the eastern region  is not to move if they are in a safe place unless extreme necessity calls for it.

Hungary, Slovakia, Romania and Poland have opened their borders on the western borders of Ukraine to receive the refugees, he added.

Many nationalities have accumulated on the western borders, he noted.

Crossing is the priority for families, and he advised those stranded in this region to communicate with the embassy in order to deal with any crisis they face in this regard, stressing that there is an operations room in the Foreign Ministry to follow up on the development of the situation in Ukraine 24 hours a day.

The assistant minster indicated that there are about 100 Egyptians who crossed to Poland, and about 120 people to Romania, appealing to those stranded in non-border areas to communicate with the embassy, and to abide by the local instructions of the country in which they is located.
