Egypt’s tennis star Mayar Sherif wins BBVA Open Internacional de Valencia

Egyptian tennis player Mayar Sherif won the BBVA Open Internacional de Valencia title on Sunday.

Sherif defeated her Spanish rival Marina Bassols Ribera, 2-0 in the final.

She won the 125-point category championship, to reach the 31st rank in the world as the best Egyptian historical achievement, surpassing the Egyptian tennis legend Ismail al-Shafei.

Sherif previously made history after becoming the first Egyptian to qualify for two Grand Slam tournaments.

She is also the first Egyptian to participate in the main competitions of the last Roland Garros tournament.

The tennis star has won eight singles titles and six doubles titles in the various international tournaments throughout the years.

She recently participated in the tennis competitions at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, becoming the first Egyptian player in history to do so, but she was eliminated in the first round.

Sherif then rose to 40th place in the women’s singles world rankings, the highest position of her career and becoming the highest-ranked Egyptian female player in history.

The Egyptian Tennis Federation praised Sherif’s achievement.

They shared a picture of the 27-year-old player and captioned “a new record”, accompanied by personal statistics about the player and her new classification.

Sherif’s great progress came after winning the Makarska Championship title in Croatia earlier in June.
