Govt to allow private ownership of power stations

The government has decided to allow Egyptian and foreign private-sector companies to build and own central electric power stations in order to avoid projected power supply shortages in coming years.

The decision will ostensibly help reduce government expenditure and interest payments.

The first international round of bidding will be held next Monday for a 700-megawatt power station in the northern province of Beheira.

Sources at the Electricity Holding Company said that the winner of the bid would sign a concession contract with the government; another contract for the sale of production from the station to the government for 20 years; and a third contract to buy gas from the government for the same period at US$3 per million British thermal units (BTU).
