Green areas to be irrigated by sewage water

The New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA) has adopted a new policy to irrigate green areas in new cities with treated sewage water.

Adel Naguib, vice president for the NUCA, said there are plans to generalize the use of treated sewage water in irrigating green spaces in new cities, in particular gardens, parks and golf courses. Signs will be used to indicate areas irrigated with sewage water.

The purpose of using sewage water for irrigation is to cut down the consumption of potable water.

The amount of water supplied to 6th October City is estimated at 476,000 cubic meters a day. There are plans to develop pumping stations in Sheikh Zayed and 6th October City to supply an additional 125,000 cubic meters of water by the end of June to satisfy local needs, Naguib said.

Naguib added that New Cairo receives 375,000 cubic meters of water a day from the Obour pumping station. There are plans to increase this amount to 500,000 cubic meters a day.
