Israel requests extradition of ‘spy’ in return for three Egyptians, says report

Egyptian news reports on Sunday said that Israeli authorities requested Egypt to extradite Ilan Grapel, an Israeli citizen recently arrested by Egyptian authorities who claim he spied for Mossad.

Egyptian state-run newspaper Al-Akhbar said it was informed that the alleged spy would be returned for three Egyptians arrested in Israel.

The newspaper added that the offer is currently being considered and there will be a response in few days.

Egyptian authorities accuse the alleged Mossad officer of attempting to harm the national security by creating divisions between protesters and the military. Grapel is also accused of gathering information about the security, political, economic and social situations in Egypt in the aftermath of 25 January revolution.

Israeli authorities deny Grapel was a spy. They emphasize the fact that he entered Egypt with a US passport, which places responsibility on the US.

Egyptian news reports said a diplomatic delegation from the Israeli Embassy in Egypt visited Grapel while he was questioned.
