Local steel, cement plants to lose power at peak hours

The Ministry of Electricity and Energy has agreed with local steel and cement factories to temporarily cut their electricity during peak consumption times so as to ease the load on the national power grid and give priority to household electricity consumption.

“Everyday, ministry officials ask us to shut down a few production lines to reduce the load,” said Ezz Steel Sales Director Samir Naaman. “This has led to a 15-percent drop in sales.”

Other steel industry sources, however, attribute the drop in sales to stagnant market conditions.
