Military council to discuss elections with political party heads

Members of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF)  will meet on Saturday with presidents of political parties to discuss their demands with regards to parliamentary elections slated for November.

Around 60 political parties on Wednesday threatened to boycott the elections and sent a list of demands to the SCAF to ensure their participation in clean elections.

Their demands include abolishing Article 5 of the elections law which bans party members from running for seats set aside for the single-winner system, issuing the Treachery Law to ban former members of the dissolved National Democratic Party from engaging in political activity, ending the State of Emergency, setting a timetable for handing over power to an elected civilian authority, and restoring security.

Waheed Abdel Maguid, the head of the electoral coordination committee for the Democratic Alliance, said the SCAF will meet with party presidents to discuss their demands. In statements to Al-Masry Al-Youm, Abdel Maguid said the alliance will decide whether to participate in parliamentary elections in light of the meeting’s results.

Abdel Maguid added that the cabinet has already started reviewing Article 5 of the parliamentary elections law.

He said that the Democratic Alliance will discuss the meeting’s results at Wafd Party headquarters, adding that all options remain open if the SCAF does not respond to their demands.
