Minister suspends state TV director over football broadcast

Information Minister Osama Heikal has ordered the suspension of television director Ahmed al-Hun, who directed the broadcast of the Ahly football match held on Monday evening.

Hun and his broadcasting team will be questioned by state television officials over the incident.

An official source at the Information Ministry said Heikal’s decision was in response to the broadcast of scenes that do not “comply with the ethics and conduct of Egyptian media, which must maintain the values and morals of our society.”

At the match, Ahly supporters hoisted a gigantic ― and hard-to-miss ― banner in the stands calling the Egyptian Football Association "thieves," which commentators after the match noted was directed at association head Samir Zaher.

"This is the first time a minister has acted so quickly in a media case like this," Football Association spokesman Azmi Megahed said on a Tuesday night talk show.
