Morsy to meet Putin in South Africa

President Mohamed Morsy will meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin during the BRICS summit in Durban, South Africa, according to Putin’s foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov.

The state-run Novosti news agency reported that Putin will head to Durban on Tuesday for two days, during which he will attend the fifth BRICS summit.

Putin will also meet South African President Jacob Zuma and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Ushakov added.

Morsy and Putin will meet Wednesday, and their discussion is expected to focus mainly on Syria, while possibly also touching upon Cyprus.

The BRICS group, consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, highlights the international role of the five countries, all of which are considered emerging major economic powers.

Morsy had earlier told an Indian newspaper that Egypt was interested in joining the group, while also praising a proposal to found a BRICS development bank before his visit to New Delhi this month.

Following his comments, the group invited Morsy to attend its summit in Durban.
