Mother sells baby for LE50,000 over financial strait

A mother has sold her 8-month-old infant to a wealthy family without children for LE50,000, according to state-run Al-Ahram newspaper’s website, which quoted police sources.

Authorities arrested the mother as she received the money, the website said.

The website said Fawzya Abdu, a 38-year-old janitor, learned from a friend that a rich couple was willing to buy her baby.

A police major from the Nasr City police station arrested Abdu. Authorities later referred her to interrogators.

Abdu admitted her intentions to interrogators, blaming difficult financial conditions, Al-Ahram said.
