NDP drags feet in announcing Shura candidates

Signs have emerged of a new crisis in the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP), which has not yet announced the names of its candidates for upcoming elections for the Shura Council (the upper, consultative chamber of parliament)–even though candidate registration officially began on Wednesday and will continue until Sunday.

NDP members urged the party to announce its proposed nominees so they might still have a chance to run in elections as independents in the event that they are not included on the list.

Informed sources said the NDP had deliberately refrained from announcing its candidates until after the deadline in order to prevent its members from running as independents, which would represent the first time for the party to adopt such a measure.

The same sources also said that the NDP’s executive board would hold extensive meetings in coming days to choose 88 candidates for the elections, slated to be held this summer.
