Palestinian leaders Abbas and Meshaal to meet in Cairo

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is scheduled to meet with Hamas political bureau chief Khaled Meshaal on 1 February in Cairo, Fatah Central Committee member Azzam al-Ahmed said Wednesday.

Ahmed told official Palestinian radio that he was slated to meet with Meshaal and other Hamas officials in Cairo Wednesday evening to address any problems or obstacles that could impede Palestinian reconciliation.

He said an Egyptian security delegation would visit the Gaza Strip and the West Bank next week to monitor the implementation of reconciliation on the ground. The visit was scheduled to take place on 20 January but was postponed for technical reasons, Ahmed said.

Ahmed, the head of Fatah's national dialogue delegation, said the visit is one of a series the Egyptian security delegation will make, as agreed upon during the Cairo meetings.

He said the delegation's mission will change following the formation of the new reconciliation government, and it will oversee the formation of a security apparatus under the auspices of the Arab League.

Meshaal, the head of the Hamas delegation, arrived in Cairo Tuesday evening and met with Egyptian officials to discuss the latest developments on national reconciliation.

Later on Wednesday, he will meet with the Swiss envoy to the Middle East, Jean Dania Rukh, to discuss a number of issues related to the Palestinian cause.
