Palestinian worker killed inside tunnel linking Egypt to Gaza

A Palestinian worker was killed and another injured on Monday while working in a smuggling tunnel located on the border between Egypt and Gaza, sources in Gaza said.

The source said a 32-year-old worker died and another was severely injured when the tunnel in Rafah, south of Gaza, collapsed.

Despite the risks, hundreds of tunnels exist along the border between Egypt and Gaza.

They are used for smuggling goods to Gaza, which has been blockaded by Israel for more than three years. At least 160 people have died inside the tunnels.

The use of the tunnels for smuggling has decreased since July, when Israel declared it would ease the blockade – a response to international calls raised last year after Israel prevented an activist aid convoy from reaching Gaza.
