Police arrest 30 fugitive prisoners

Police arrested 30 fugitive prisoners in Beni Suef, south of Cairo, after an exchange of fire between both parties. The prisoners, who were serving sentences for murder or attempted murder, had escaped from the Fayoum and Nasser prisons during the 25 January revolution.

Many Egyptian prisons witnessed riots and escapes following the outbreak of the revolution that toppled former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on 11 February.

According to official reports released after Mubarak's resignation, Interior Ministry officials ordered prison gates opened on 28 January to create chaos.
