Police disperse Ramses protest with teargas

Egyptian police fired teargas on Wednesday to disperse hundreds of demonstrators in Ramses, Cairo’s busiest square, eyewitnesses said.

A group of around 600 protesters managed sneak into downtown Cairo by tricking security forces which were blocking the roads. They gathered in Ramses chanting anti-government slogans, activists and eyewitnesses told Al-Masry Al-Youm.

The police retaliated by firing several teargas canisters at protesters.

Burning tires were seen in Ramses.

The protesters then headed west to join another group of 300 protesters in the adjacent al-Esaf area.

Heavy security forces are now cordoning off important buildings in the area such as the Supreme Judicial House and the Lawyers’ Syndicate.
