Rights groups call for stepped-up security to prevent harassment during Eid

Local rights groups have called on police to ratchet up security on the streets of Cairo to prevent cases of harassment during the Eid al-Adha holiday, which began on Tuesday.

Organizers of a campaign, entitled "A Safe Street for All," urged police to secure main streets, public gardens, playgrounds and other areas expected to see large turnouts for Eid al-Adha festivities.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Egyptian Center for Women’s Rights called for the deployment of police patrols to deter anyone attempting to break the law or violate personal freedoms.

Previous Eid festivities have typically witnessed higher-than-usual levels of street harassment. In some cases, harassment was perpetrated by large mobs of young men who collectively harassed women in public areas.
