Street vendors, police clash in Alexandria

Alexandria—Hundreds of street vendors have clashed with security forces in el-Sa’a area in Montazah district in the coastal city of Alexandria to protest evacuation plans by police following several complaints from area residents.

Vendors hurled stones at police trucks early yesterday, and assaulted the officer in charge of the campaign and several policemen, security sources said. Some vendors were also injured, they added.

“The sellers also attacked a traffic control unit, and burned one of its motorbikes,” they said, adding that the police arrested 30 street vendors.

Al-Masry Al-Youm could not reach any of the rioters.

Security forces normally crack down on street vendors who occupy sidewalks in Egyptian cities to sell cheap commodities.
