Sudanese opposition seized by pre-election discord

Discord erupted between the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Sudan (SPLM) and Sudanese opposition parties, with the latter threatening to boycott general and presidential elections slated for next Sunday.

Opposition leaders accused the SPLM of striking a deal with Sudan’s ruling party whereby it would withdraw its presidential candidate, Yasser Arman, in return for political autonomy for the southern part of the country.

Twelve SPLM members nominated to represent the movement in the north threatened to withdraw from elections if the movement withdrew its presidential candidate.

Umma Reform and Renovation Party presidential candidate Mubarak el-Fadel was the first to raise the issue of an alleged under-the-table agreement between the SPLM and Sudan’s ruling party.
