Suez Canal sees its highest daily crossing rate ever

The Suez Canal recorded the highest daily crossing rate in its history on Monday as 107 ships crossed from multiple directions of the canal with a total net tonnage of 6.3 million tons, the head of the Suez Canal Authority Osama Rabie announced.

Fifty-six ships passed through the canal from the northern direction with a net tonnage of 3.4 million tons, while 51 ships crossed from the southern direction with a total net tonnage of 2.9 million tons.

Rabie stressed that the huge boom in the daily transit rates in the canal would not have been possible without the new Suez Canal project.

This succeeded in increasing the absorptive capacity of the canal and raising the its readiness to receive the current and future generations of giant ships with large drafts.

The unprecedented navigational rates canal reflect the vision of the political leadership regarding the technical and economic feasibility of projects to develop the navigational course of the Suez Canal crossing in the short and medium terms, he said.

A project is currently under development to develop the southern sector of the canal, which will allow for an increase in navigational safety rates in this important sector by 28 percent and an increase in the capacity of the canal by about six additional vessels, he added.

The giant container ship EVER GIFTED, classified as one of the largest container ships in the world, crossed from the northern direction on Monday with a total tonnage of 223,000 tons, on its journey from Greece to Malaysia.

And the COSCO SHIPPING UNIVERSE container ship flying the Hong Kong flag came from the south, with a total tonnage of 232,000 tons, on its journey from Singapore to Greece.
