Dozens of Syrian citzens in Cairo staged a protest outside the Iraqi Embassy on Thursday to condemn what they labeled Iraq’s pro-Assad stance.
The protesters chanted against the Iraqi authorities after Iraq refused to approve economic sanctions imposed by the Arab League against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
Protesters also diplayed images of children and old people killed by Syrian troops during the ongoing uprising, which started eight months ago. They held Iraqi Prime Minister Nour al-Maliki responsible for the deaths of protesters, blaming his pro-Assad stance.
Iraq expressed reservations about the Arab League decision to impose economic sanctions on the Syrian regime after it refused to stop the bloody crackdown against protests. The UN estimated that 4000 Syrians have died in the fighting since March.
The Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoashiar Zibary on Thursday announced that the Iraqi cabinet would discuss the Arab League initiative to stop violence in Syria. Zibary said during a joint press conference with Nabil al-Araby that the Iraqi cabinet would do its best to convince the Syrian regime to accept the initiative.
Iraqi authorities said they would contact the Syrian regime to settle the issue, said Araby.
The Arab League initiative includes an immediate stop to violence in Syria, the release of detained protesters and the withdrawal of Syrian troops from towns and cities.
