Transportation Ministry warns against continued protests

The Egyptian Ministry of Transportation warned government entities against following in the footsteps of recently-staged protests.

Employees of the The General Authority for Roads, Bridges and Land Transport (GARBLT) demonstrated recently due to alleged bonus cancellations. The employees said 36 high-level advisers received bonuses ranging from LE15,000 to LE28,000.

Al-Masry Al-Youm obtained a memorandum submitted to GARBLT head Atef al-Bolok by the ministry's Crisis Management Administration. In the document, the administration criticized al-Bolok's methods of dealing with the bonus dispute.

Ministry officials warned that the country's political situation requires more prudent tactics in resolving crises.

"We recommend decreasing bonuses gradually later due to employees economic and social condition, in addition to the current state of political mobility," Mohamed al-Demerdash, recently retired ministerial assistant for crisis management, mentioned in the memorandum.

The memorandum also said the transportation minister instructed GARBLT officials to contain the crisis within the authority.

Al-Demerdash emphasized the importance of holding a meeting with all employee representatives to clarify the situation.
