Truckers differ on 3-month strike suspension

Striking truck drivers differed on calls to suspend strikes for three months. Strikers' associations called for the move in order to test the government's seriousness in cancelling a new cargo tax.

Some drivers returned to work while others continued to strike for the seventh consecutive day.

In a meeting with representatives of truckers associations on Tuesday, Transport Minister Alaa Fahmy conceded to certain demands, including that of opening a special school for drivers. However, the minister refused to discuss abolishing new restrictions on trailers. “Those are out of my hands,” he claimed.

Finance Minister Adviser Mohamed Allam confirmed that the new cargo tax was cancelled.
