Former Director of Bibliotheca Alexandrina and Egyptian thinker Mostafa al-Feki warned of US President Donald Trump’s thirst for dominance, stating that he had even attempted to take control of the Suez Canal at one point.
During a Wednesday interview with Sherif Amer on the “Yahdoth fe Misr” show (Happening in Egypt), Feki stated his belief that Trump’s interest in straits and gulfs stems from his desire for control over global strategic waterways.
He added that discussions with the US over the Suez Canal were met with clear rejection, emphasizing that the canal “was dug by Egyptians with their blood,” underscoring its national and historical symbolism for Egyptians.
Fiqi explained that the Suez Canal represents part of Egyptian sovereignty and holds immense historical value, linked to the sacrifices of Egyptians over decades.
He also recalled Trump’s statements regarding the Strait of Hormuz, when the US President called last year for American military and commercial vessels to be allowed free passage through the Suez and Panama Canals.
Trump said, “American military and commercial vessels should be allowed free passage through the Panama and Suez Canals! These canals would not exist without the United States of America.”
The US president noted at the time that he had instructed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to follow up on this matter immediately.
