Vendors, protesters clash in downtown Cairo

Clashes broke out in downtown Cairo Tuesday morning between street vendors and protesters from Tahrir Square.

Protesters forced two vendors out of the square, eyewitnesses said. When the pair came back later, accompanied by a group of others, they started fighting with demonstrators in Talaat Harb Street.

Some attackers took shelter at nearby residential buildings and hurled stones and glass. A large number of other attackers arrived later, the eyewitnesses said.

Some demonstrators managed to break into one of the buildings and catch one of the two vendors, while the rest fled away. Some eyewitnesses said the two vendors were pushed out of the square after they harassed some female protesters.

Army and police forces were absent from the scene, though the fighting lasted for 45 minutes. The Associated Press reported six people were injured.
