Egypt’s population reaches 87 million

Egypt's population reached 87 million on Tuesday at 6:46 pm, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).

CAPMAS said that the population increased by one million in the past six months, averaging 5,604 people per day.

The population reached 86 million on 22 February. The natural increase rate recorded 2.5 percent in 2013, compared to 2.6 percent in 2012.

According to population estimates, Cairo has the biggest number of residents reaching 9.2 million (10.6 percent of the total population), Giza follows with 7.5 million (8.6 percent) and Sharqiya comes third with 6.4 million (7.4 percent). South Sinai has the lowest population with 172,000 inhabitants (0.2 percent). New Valley has 222,000 residents (0.3 percent), while Red Sea has 342,000 people (0.4 percent).

Population density is estimated at 1,130 persons per one square kilometer. The highest density was recorded in Cairo with 47,285 in one square kilometer, then Gize with 6,122 in one square kilometer.

The lowest density was recorded in South Sinai with 9.7 in one square kilometer, then Suez with 67 in each square kilometer.
