Postcard from Abu Dhabi: Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Entering the emirate of Abu Dhabi, one is greeted by the truly majestic and breath-taking mosque of Sheikh Zayed, widely considered to be one of the most beautiful mosques in the world. Visiting the mosque made me understand why.

Not only is the architecture a masterpiece, it is also a truly spiritual place.

The architecture is a fusion of Arab, Mughal and Moorish architecture. The mosque has 1000 stunning columns throughout decorated with gold leaf, precious stones and marble. There are 57 domes covering the outside yard and the main building. The mosque is large enough to accommodate 40,000 worshipers and the inside area has the largest carpet in the world, made in Iran.

Sheikh Zayed was personally involved in every step of the project until his death and you can see the meticulous details in every corner of the mosque.

Sheikh Zayed is currently buried at the mosque. You see his grave close to the entrance. At times when there are no prayers taking place, a sheikh can be heard beautifully reciting the Qur'an close to the grave.

I couldn't think of a more beautiful and inspiring way to be welcomed in Abu Dhabi.
