Egypt’s Minister of Social Solidarity, Ali Moselhy, announced yesterday that ten civil society organizations have pledged to provide three million food bags to people in need during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. Each bag will include sugar, rice, tea, oil, vegetable ghee, macaroni, and dates.

The minister said the contents of each bag will be sufficient to meet the needs of poor families throughout the holy month.

Donors include the Islamic charity el-Gameya el-Shareya, which alone will provide over one million bags, and the Egyptian Food Bank, which will offer 750,000. The remaining supplies will come from institutions that collect the annual Islamic zakat (charitable donation), including the Nasser Social Bank, Masr el-Kheir Foundation, Resala, Ahbab al-Hussein, and al-Orman charity.

The minister noted that provincial ministry departments will coordinate the distribution process with donors. Departments will be instructed to provide each family with no more than one bag, complete and unopened.
