Egypt’s top prosecutor orders investigation into media city blasts

Egypt's top prosecutor tasked the Homeland Security and Criminal Investigation Authority on Tuesday to investigate the explosion of two electric pylons at the Media Production City.

The blast, which occurred early Tuesday, resulted in cutting off the transmission of a number of satellite channels. Transmission gradually returned nevertheless, as channels relied on electricity generators.

Prosecutor General Hisham Barakat said in a statement that preliminary inspection revealed that the explosion destroyed one pylon and caused damage to the other one.

Since the ouster of president Mohamed Mursi in July 2013, militant attacks have been on the rise. Electricity pylons and railway tracks are often targeted.

The cabinet is currently drafting a law which stipulates that whoever vandalises electricity facilities would be punished by a maximum of three years in prison and/or a 500 thousand Egyptian-pound fine.
