Electricity Minister: No more power cuts in 2014 thanks to Saudi Arabia

Minister of Electricity Ahmed Imam said that his government has a permanent solution for power outages that are common especially in the summer months.

Imam said that there will be no more power cuts after an electricity linkage project with Saudi Arabia is complete.

“The linkage will provide 3000 megawatts that we can use at peak times given the time difference between Egypt and Saudi Arabia,” Imam told Arab Net on Thursday evening. “We will not have to ease loads this coming summer.”

“We need 29,000 megawatts in the summer,” added. “We will have all we need after the launch of six new power stations that will begin in January.”

The minister explained that Egypt’s electricity needs spike in the summer months due to increased air conditioner use.
