Several marine environment experts have warned against the increasing overfishing of seashells in the Red Sea, which could lead to their extinction and cause an imbalance in the sea's ecosystem.
The shells, according to the experts, are fished to get the soft part inside the shell which are eaten for their high nutritional value. The shells are also sold to restaurants and used to prepare seafood meals.
Shell fishing has been noticed in sporadic areas along Red Sea beaches, especially south of al-Hamrawein phosphate port in Quseir city. Hundreds of seashells were found empty of their soft parts in the area.
