Five sanitary landfills to be established: Environment Ministry

The Environment Ministry has announed plans to build five new landfills using the latest sanitary methods, incorporating technologies to reduce pollution alongside facilities to recycle materials.

Speaking to the state-owned MENA agency on Wednesday, Fahmy said that half of all garbage arriving at the new sites will be buried while the other half will be recycled.

The project, which will be completed in co-operation with a Chinese company, will see two sites established in the desert of Bilbeis, one on Ain Sokhna Road, one in Saff and Koraymat, 32 km from Helwan, and another in Kom-Aushim to serve Giza governorate.

Chinese company will cooperate with Cairo and Fayyoum governorates to prepare a study of the project, which will be reviewed after six weeks.

The five locations were chosen by presidential decision aimed at dealing with the capital's garbage and recycling needs using modern methods.

Fahmy dismissed rumours that the five new landfills would be build at random or in the traditional style.
