Nazif interrogated over 25 January incidents

Revolution Prosecution, held in New Cairo, on Monday interrogated former Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif over violence committed against protesters during the January 25 Revolution that toppled former President Hosni Mubarak.

In post since July 2004, Nazif was compelled to resign on January 29 in the midst of the uprising in a bid to restore calm to the country. Nazif’s government had faced protesters with excessive use of force.

Nazif has been convicted previously on charges of wasting public money under the rule of ousted President Hosni Mubarak.

Prosecution questioned Nazif Monday over incidents that occurred in Egypt from 25 January 2011 until his resignation, judicial sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm, without providing further details.

No charges were brought against Nazif during Monday’s three-hour session after which he was returned to Tora Prison, the sources said.

Although Nazif has faced charges in a number of cases with regard to squandering public money and profiteering, he has never been interrogated about political incidents that occurred under his tenure.

The source also said that some figures, who occupied important posts during the revolution, would be questioned in the coming days.
