A bomb squad on Tuesday defused a homemade bomb that was placed next to the Al-Azhar University dormitories in Nasr City.
Bomb experts combed the area to make sure there are no other bombs hidden.
The public prosecution has launched an investigation.
Al-Azhar University has been the scene of many demonstrations by students loyal to ousted President Mohamed Morsy.
Violent clashes between them and police erupt from time to time.
Recently police were allowed to return and secure campuses by a court order.
