Mexico’s president meets tourists wounded in Egypt attack

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto on Friday visited six Mexican tourists who were wounded in an attack in Egypt.

The presidential airplane that transported the victims from Egypt, landed Friday in Mexico City before they were taken to the National Institute or Rehabilitation via helicopters.

Pena Nieto also met with the relatives of eight Mexicans who were killed in the attack Sept. 13.

After the meeting, Pena Nieto said he hoped the bodies of the eight Mexicans who were killed in the attack will be repatriated to Mexico next week.

“Experts are investigating the deaths. We are trying to accelerate the process in order to be able to have the bodies back in Mexico as soon as possible,” he said at a press conference.

Health Minister Mercedes Juan said the survivors are in a delicate, but stable condition and being treated for abrasions, fractures and burns.

The undersecretary for foreign affairs asked to Egypt to compensate the victims who were mistakenly attacked by Egyptian security forces.

"The Mexican government demands the necessary guarantees so that the victims of the tragic and regrettable attack perpetrated on Sept. 13, all of the innocent civilians and their families, receive full reparations for the damage, including compensation," Carlos Icaza said in the statement Thursday night.

Egyptian forces opened fire on four vehicles in which the tourists were traveling, after mistaking them for terrorists.

A total of 12 victims were killed in the attack.
