Egypt’s Prime Minister announces beginning of training Palestinian forces

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced that Egypt has begun training Palestinian security forces, during a meeting on supporting stability in Gaza at the United Nations headquarters in New York City.

“Egypt has begun training Palestinian security forces, and we are ready to expand this process with the support of the international community,” he said.

He added that, “On the other hand, Egypt is ready to support any efforts to establish an international mission to support the return of the Palestinian Authority to the Gaza Strip and the building of a Palestinian state. We see the need to make this possible and to work to reach a political framework agreed upon by Israel and the US before entering into discussions on the details and tasks of the mission. These details will naturally be shaped according to what is agreed upon politically.”

Madbouly was joined in the meeting by the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, and officials from Arab and foreign countries.

The Prime Minister’s attendance at this meeting comes on the sidelines of his participation, at the head of a high-level delegation on behalf of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, in the Two-State Solution Conference and the opening of the high-level segment of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, held under the theme “Better Together: 80 Years and Beyond for Peace, Development, and Human Rights.”

Madbouly began his remarks by thanking French President Emmanuel Macron for inviting him to the meeting and for his efforts to support Palestinian rights, which, along with the efforts of Saudi Arabia, resulted in holding the two-state solution conference.

He emphasized that Egypt considers this a starting point on the path to achieving a just and sustainable solution to the Palestinian issue – one based on the two-state solution and the establishment of a Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967, lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The Prime Minister also thanked President Macron for France’s historic decision to recognize the State of Palestine.
