FM: Egypt seeks to train African states in fighting cybercrime

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty held talks on Saturday 8/11/2025 with Ghada Waly, Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and Director-General of the UN Office in Vienna.

The meeting aims to discuss Egypt’s plan to host a regional center for training African countries in combating cybercrime in partnership with the UNODC.

During the talks, the two sides discussed strengthening cooperation in security and capacity-building.

For his part, Abdelatty said that Egypt aims to benefit from the UN office’s expertise to train Egyptian and African specialists in cybercrime prevention and investigation.

He added that Egypt seeks to host a global center for combating illicit trafficking in cultural property, supporting international efforts to protect heritage and cultural assets.

Abdelatty discussed maritime security cooperation, calling for UNODC technical and logistical support to combat organized crime in the Red Sea and ensure navigational safety.

He reaffirmed that managing Red Sea affairs is the responsibility of its coastal states, which are directly concerned with its security and sustainable use.

Additionally, the duo reviewed preparations for the international conference on early recovery and reconstruction in Gaza, which Egypt will host.

Abdelatty called for strong UN participation to ensure clear commitments and effective recovery projects that would ease the suffering of the Palestinian people.

At the end of the meeting, Waly presented Abdelatty with a copy of the UN Convention on Combating Cybercrime, adopted by the UN General Assembly in December 2024, which seeks to strengthen international cooperation against cyber threats and facilitate the exchange of electronic evidence in serious crimes.
