Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi commented on a proposal to amend the Child Law following a recent spate of horrific crimes committed by minors.
During a visit to the Military Academy on Wednesday, Sisi stated, “This issue has a societal dimension. While we in Egypt have numerous laws covering all areas, the crucial point, and what must be emphasized, is the strict and unconditional implementation of these laws.”
Sisi also stressed “the necessity of developing public awareness and understanding to ensure the proper application and enforcement of the laws,” RT reported.
The entire community has a role to play in this issue, including families, schools, universities, mosques, churches, alongside the media, the President added.
Horrific crimes committed by youth
A wave of several shocking crimes committed by children under the age of 18 has recently spread across Egypt.
These include the case of a 13-year-old boy in Ismailia who lured his classmate, killed him, dismembered his body, buried parts of it, and reportedly even ate a piece.
Another child committed a horrific crime by sexually assaulting his sister until her death.
According to Egyptian law, children under the age of 18 cannot be criminally punished. Only juvenile courts have jurisdiction over cases involving children over the age of 12.
